Need verses return on investment

Most things we need actually have no other return-on-investment (ROI) besides keeping us healthy and alive. Shelter may be the exception since investing in a home usually increases in value over time. Food, energy, transportation, clothing, security, entertainment, education and self-enhancement are not expected to have a ROI, although they are necessary to exist and move forward. My point is that we don’t expect ROI on things we need and want unless it is a specific investment purchase for that purpose.

So why is it that energy is just another necessity unless it is a solar energy system. Solar energy not only provides energy but also security and self-enhancement by providing independence. Three categories of need and want are fulfilled by solar energy systems before even considering that it also provides a healthy ROI.
